In 2005 the Boeing 787-800 Dreamliner was taking orders, and Boeing claimed passengers and airliners wanted point to point connexions.
Airbus was going to deliver it's first A380 in 2006, claiming it would have a cost per seat of 15 to 20 procent lower than the dominant Boeing 747-400.
