On 22nd April 1998 the first Boeing 737-800 was deliverd to Hapag Lloyd.
The 737-800 was the second next generation Boeing 737 and came just after the smaller Boeing 737-700. The larger 737-900 came much later.

By the end of 2006, Boeing had recieved 2082 orders for a 737-800. Airlines that bought the 737-800 include: Ryanair (200), Air Berlin, Qantas, norwegian (70), Turkish Airlines, Korean Air, Air Europa, KLM (21), Royal Air Maroc, Transavia, ... 

By may 2005 some 869 boeing 737-800 had been build and all were still in service and some 389 were on order.

The 737-800 is larger than the successful 737-300 of the previous generation. The main competitor of the Boeing 737-800 is the Airbus A320.
