Airlines: Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) flies passengers and cargo domestically and to destinations throughout Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. AZAL was once a part of Aeroflot, the national airline of the Soviet Union until the split in 1991. Originally, AZAL was founded in 1923.

In the first nine months of 1997 28% of the flights were carried out by international airlines like Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines, 40% by CIS Airlines like Turkmenistan Airlines and Uzbekistan Airways and 32% by domestic airlines like Azerbaijan Airlines and Imair.
