The airport is located 30km east of Bangkok. When the airport opened to traffic in september 2006, the fast train link to the city center would take a few more years to be finished.
Construction began on 9 November 2001 and was expected to be complete by December 2004. The new airport will be able to cope with 100 million passengers per year. It will have four runways. When the airport opened in september 2006, it only had 2 runways, but was said to be (nearly) the largest airport in the world, in ways like having the highest control tower (132 m).

Bangkok International Airport is located 25 kilometres north of the city of Bangkok.
The airport recieved 25 623 901 passengers in 1998. In september 2006 the traffic was diverted to the new airport.
