The CFM International CFM56 is as old as 1974. It's a high-bypass turbofan. By 2010 CFM International had already delivered 20.000 CFM56 engines.

This engine type exists in many forms. It's used on a variety of airliners:
- Boeing 737 (classic and next generation -600, -700, -800, -900, BBJ)
- Airbus A320 family
- Airbus A340-300 and -200
- Douglas BC-8 Super 70
- Boeing 707 (KC-135R Stratotanker)
