|There is a true railway station at the airport. Very easy. You can just walk there from both passenger terminals in 2011.
Frequency to the main railway station downtown is good with several trains each hour. The railways are safe and very clean in Cologne in 2010. Price one way in 2010 was 2,40 euro. You need a zone 1b ticket and not a zone 1a ticket which is 2 euro for a single journey between the airport and the city center. ICI trains (high speed) can't be boarded with just regional transport tickets.
The Cologne main railwaystation is ideally located right in the heat of the city, just next to the Cologne Dom (Catherdral). Here you will find a true city center, with the main shopping streets and a area with bars and restaurants along the river Rhine.
But when you want to travel to the airport from the nearby main railway station in the city center of Cologne, it might get confusing. And not all S-bahn trains are shown at the departures in the main railway station. Some regional trains (which aren't S-bahn) do also link the airport with the city ceter.
