The airport is constructed on an artificially created island in Osaka Bay. There are plenty of public transport possibilities to Osaka and Kobe.
This airport opened in September 1994. The new airport was the first in Japan to be open around the clock. In 1998 KIX recieved 19 161 035 passengers. After the first island with one runway, the construction of a second island with another runway was started.
