Singapore Changi Airport is located at the eastern tip of Singapore along the coastal line of the island, some 20 kilometres from the city centre.
In 1998 the international airport recieved 23 803 180 passengers. In 2002 that passenger number peaked at 28 979 344 passengers. After the construction of a third terminal, the airport is designed to handle over 64 million passengers.
More than half of Changi Airport 's total land was reclaimed from the sea. To make way for the construction of Changi Airport in 1975, almost 200 hectares of swamp land area were cleared.
In 2000 tourism and international banking are important sources of foreign exchange revenue for Singapore. The country has one of the largest international airports in Asia, and a 26-km (16-mi) rail line that crosses Johore Strait and links with the Malaysian railroad system.
