Paris is the capital if France since 987 and by far it's largest city since several centuries. It's no skyscraper paradise. The 19th century buildings and streets dominate. When you arrive at Charles De Gaulle airport you can probably best the a bus towards the Opera building near Galleries LaFayette. This area around Opera is part of the heart of the city and you will find plenty of international tourists here, as well as the local upper class French. From here you want walk towards Place Vendome.
