Container traffic increased from 104.899 TEU in 1991 to 887,035 TEU in 2005.
In millions of tons of cargo traffic increased from 9 million in 1997 to nearly 14 million in 2005.
It was the major port of all the Spanish Colony in South America. The port had to resist the pirates attacks during the 16th and 17th centuries.
Although Callao it is a seperate city with 638.000 inhabitants, it is generally considered to be part of Greater Lima.
