The Port of Tianjin consists of both seaport and river port. The Port of Tianjin is located over 170 kilometers from the city of Beijing.

It is situated at the junction of the Hai River and the Grand Canal.

From the 11th to the 14th century, Tianjin gained prominence as a port for Beijing during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (Ch'ing) (1644-1911) dynasties.

The Japanese occupied the city during 1937-45; they began the construction of Tanggu and initiated port improvements at Tianjin proper, completed by the Chinese in the early 1950s.
