Railways have been constructed in Senegal by the French, but the colonial transportation infrastructure has been largely abandoned, replaced with roads and busses and trucks.
GARE FERROVIAIRE DE DAKAR
Place de la gare, Dakar
Two different trains run between Bamako (Malis capital) and Dakar (Senegals capital), each wholly owned and operated by either Mali or Senegal.
The Dakar-Bamako route is a single track with periodic stretches of a
parallel second
track to enable trains to pass. If one trains is late, the one in the opposite direction
is forced to be also late.
In 2007 the trainride is very bumpy and derailments are quite common.
