Depart Seattle early morning aboard Amtrak's Cascades service to the cosmopolitan city of Vancouver, BC. There were no trains during the day in 2004, but you can take the bus from Seattle to Vancouver. It's about 156 miles which takes about 4 hours, both by train or bus.
It's easier to take a train to Portland. In 2004 there were 3 trains a day between Seattle and Portland, and the journey took about 4 hours.
